What is it that would drive people to risk, not only the security of a
job, but their very lives and the lives of family members? The jailer
of Paul and Silas, in today’s first reading, apparently took a
tremendous risk deliberately and with great joy. When Paul’s and Silas’
chains fell off during an earthquake sent by God, the jailer took Paul
and Silas to his home. He accepted Jesus into his life.
We see similar sacrificial conversions several times in the New
Testament. What was it that drove these people to change their lives so
drastically to follow Jesus? We can only imagine that they were touched
by the Good News of Jesus Christ preached by the apostles. Paul and
Silas most likely attracted the jailer by their witness to the Gospel,
and their rejoicing in the face of their harsh imprisonment and
possible death.
As followers of Jesus we are called to bring the Good News to those
around us to encourage them to be open to Jesus. We can, like Paul and
Silas, attract others to the Gospel by let ting the joy and peace of
following Jesus shine through our lives. We have opportunities to be
witnesses for Christ every day. People should see by the way we live
that we are different, that we possess something in our hearts that
gives us joy and peace. And where do we ourselves find this joy?
The Gospel tells us that the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier, who brings us
the fruits of peace, joy, love, patience and kindness, did not come
only at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is with us at all times. Let us call
upon the Holy Spirit for the gifts that we need to show Christ to those
around us by our lives of love and service.

Finally,
we pray
for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who
need our prayers the most.
Have a
good day!
