Why do we fast? It can be done out of asceticism, purification or health. In the scripture, some occasions of fasting are done before under taking a difficult task, asking for pardon, healing, after a national disaster, awaiting the grace necessary to accomplish some mission. As a preparation to meet God, Moses fasted for 40 days. Besides liturgical fasting, pious Jews also fast out of personal devotion as in the case of John the Baptist’s disciples and the Pharisees. But this practice involves certain dangers. The greatest of this is pride. They fast “in order to be seen by men”, because they have accomplished the law. That is why the Pharisees asked Jesus why he and his disciples don’t fast.
Christ is not against fasting. In order for it to be pleasing and acceptable to God it should be done in secret, known only to him. Christ forbade any display of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Christ mentioned in the gospel another kind of fasting and it is the fasting of faith, the kind which is also being practiced by the Church. Out of love for the bridegroom, we the bride awaits with expectation, the coming of our Bridegroom who is Christ, through penitential fasting particularly and especially through detachment and renunciation.

Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
Have a good day!
